BROKEN BABY

L.A.-based quartet Broken Baby deliver a snarling and urgent blast of pop-infused post-punk. Formed by The Damnwells’ Alex Dezen and former actor and vocalist Amber Bollinger, the duo started making music after Bollinger had been on tour with Dezen in 2017. Throwing all inhibition out the window, the pair started to play their own brand of melodic, yet raw post-punk, delivering their self-titled debut EP that very same year. Naturally, live shows followed in and around L.A., with the duo making a name for themselves with their incendiary performances. LA Weekly named Broken Baby “one of the greatest live bands in LA right now.”

BIG BILL

When the world’s burning, and our existence seems more puny and senseless than ever, the only thing left to do is to lean into the absurdity. Enter: Big Bill—Austin’s part beautiful, part ridiculous freak-punk four-piece, who are coaxing their listeners from numbness to exhilaration, even while the world’s crumbling before us. Listening to their second album Public Freakout Compilation, which opens with Eric Braden’s Cartman-core vocals, you’ll feel a bizarre yet aching appreciation for being alive. While it might sound like a sonic shitpost—”or a shitty YouTube compilation you might stumble onto late at night,” in singer Eric’s words—the message at its core is unassumingly earnest. Even when the subject matter could be dreary, Big Bill always lands on a positive conclusion; a way to lift themselves, and their listener, out of despair and into hope.

HURT HAWKS

Hurt Hawks hails from sunny Arcadia, a lonely suburb of Los Angeles which is home to Santa Anita Park Race Track, a regular haunt of American Poet and Novelist, Charles Bukowski. Across from the Santa Anita Park was the recently demolished Santa Anita Inn, which is where Hunter S. Thompson, under the influence of multiple substances, is rumored to have written the majority of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Jack Kerouac also immortalizes the city of Arcadia in his seminal novel On The Road, where the beat poet laments about protagonist Sal Paradise, and his Mexican girlfriend Terry, encountering racist teenagers.

Hurt Hawks consists of producer/composer Jake Bowman, transgressive fiction writer/song and dance man Joel Zimmerman, and on occasion, songbird Erica ”Bunny” Zimmerman. The duo follows the footsteps of the aforementioned literary giants with their own brand of dirty realism, wryly labeled Americana Drunkwave, which is a form of jittery electronic post-punk, sung to the tune of an alcoholic life in a Los Angeles suburb.

Hurt Hawks has been referred to as a punk rock Leonard Cohen, or a dark wave Tom Waits, and is revered for their colorful live performances.
